Seven months

Cécile's treatment started seven months ago.

Today she had an appointment with her hematologist at Debré. The doctor seems happy with the way things are progressing. She confirmed the decision not to catch up the chemo Cécile didn't have during her week in hospital so next week Cécile will continue as originally planned with the final phase of this main part of her treatment. It's called Intensification 2. The doctors have said it is usually better tolerated than Intensification 1 which Cécile went through in October and November with awful side effects. At least we know what they are likely to be and have all the necessary medicine available to relieve the pain.

So this final eight-week phase is split, like the other phases, into two four-week blocks. There is likely to be a gap between each block if Cécile doesn't have the necessary blood count to continue. The first block is intensive treatment in hospital - Cécile will have to go to Corbeil on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for 2 1/2 weeks for chemo. During the first week she will also have a lumbar puncture. For three weeks she will be on corticosteroids which mean a salt-free, sugar-free diet. The corticosteroids aren't the same as the ones taken in October so we're hoping they won't cause the same painful side effects.

The final week of the first block is the resting week to allow the bone marrow to build up its levels. This is when Cécile will have to return to see her hematologist before starting the final four-week block after which, hopefully, Cécile will have the cathéter removed and will be able to return to school. But she's not there yet. The next few weeks are likely to be very difficult for her. But the days are starting to get longer and the bulbs are growing in the garden - spring is such a lovely time of year.

Aujourd'hui elle avait rendez-vous avec son médecin traitant à Debré. Le médecin semble satisfaite des progrès de Cécile. Elle a confirmé la décision de ne pas rattraper la chimio que Cécile n'a pas eue la semaine dernière: on poursuit le protocole et la dernière phase du traitement intensif va commencer lundi prochain. Cette phase s'appelle Intensification 2. Les médecins nous disent qu'en général, elle est mieux tolérée que l'Intensification 1 que Cécile a suivie en octobre et novembre avec des effets secondaires très pénibles. Nous les connaissons et sommes équipés avec tous les médicaments nécessaires pour soulager la douleur si nécessaire.

Donc - cette dernière phase de huit semaines est séparée en deux fois quatre semaines, comme les autres phases. Il y aura probablement une pause entre les deux parties si le bilan sanguin de Cécile n'est pas suffisamment élevé pour continuer. La première partie est assez intense - Cécile ira à Corbeil les lundis, mercredis et vendredis pendant 2 semaines et demie. La première semaine elle aura une ponction lombaire. Pendant les trois premières semaines elle prendra des corticoïdes et aura donc un régime sans sucre, sans sel. Les corticoïdes ne sont pas les mêmes que ceux pris au mois d'octobre et nous espérons que les effets secondaires seront moins pénibles.

La quatrième semaine sera une semaine de repos pour que la moelle puisse se régénérer. Pendant cette semaine Cécile devra retourner voir son médecin référent avant d'entamer les quatre dernières semaines. Ensuite, si tout se passe comme il faut, on enlèvera le cathéter et Cécile pourra retourner à l'école. Mais on n'y est pas encore. Les semaines à venir seront dures pour elle. Mais les journées commencent à se rallonger et les bulbes commencent à pousser dans le jardin - le printemps est une belle saison.
