Quick update

So the blood count this morning wasn't much better than the one done on Tuesday. But improving slowly. The ANC have gone from 100 to 170 ... but still a long way off the 500 she needs. Unfortunately the CRP levels have risen, indicating that the antibiotics Cecile is taking aren't managing to get rid off the infection. This is backed up by the clinical fact that her temperature keeps going up to nearly 39°, especially at night. (CRP = C-reactive protein, the levels of which rise in response to inflammation)
The doctors have spoken with her hemotologist in Paris who has said to add another antibiotic (unfortunately one which gives Cécile a skin reaction so it has to be administered at a very slow rate over 24 hours alongside antihistamines to reduce the risk of a reaction). Cécile had a scan of her kidneys this afternoon - nothing wrong there. There are also tests being done on urine and fecal samples. Another blood test will be done on Saturday morning now. Cécile won't be able to be discharged until she's had 48 hours with no temperature above 38° and a lowering of the CRP levels.
Despite all this aggravation and exasperation Cécile never ceases to amaze. She's managed to carry on with her school work, teaching her nurses about the different overseas French departments and playing charades and other games to pass the time. Let's hope she'll be able to come home this weekend.

Le bilan ce matin n'était guère mieux que celui de mardi. Les PNN augmentent péniblement - elle est passée de 100 à 170 mais toujours loin des 500 nécessaires. Malheureusement le niveau du CRP a augmenté (une protéine qui sert de marqueur biologique pour les réactions inflammatoires) ce qui veut dire que les antibiotiques ne sont pas assez efficaces car ils ne font pas partir l'infection. En plus, Cécile a toujours de la fièvre, surtout la nuit.
Les médecins ont parlé avec son hématologue à Paris qui a dit qu'il fallait rajouter un autre antibiotique (malheureusement, celui qui a provoqué des réactions cutanées en décembre mais ils vont le faire passer sur 24 heures avec en plus des antihistaminiques pour éviter le risque de réaction). Cécile a eu une échographie des reins aujourd'hui - aucun problème à ce niveau là, et ils font des tests sur les urines et les selles. Ils feront un autre bilan samedi matin. Cécile ne pourra pas quitter l'hôpital tant qu'elle n'aura pas passé 48 heures sans fièvre et que le CRP n'aura pas baissé.
En dépit de toutes ces contrariétés Cécile garde le moral. Elle est vraiment épatante. Elle arrive à travailler, en apprenant aux infirmières que les DOM-TOM n'existent plus! On joue aux charades et d'autres jeux pour faire passer le temps. Espérons qu'elle pourra rentrer à la maison ce week-end.
