Slight setback

Cécile was unable to start the next phase of chemo last Monday as her PMN levels are too low. Not sure actually if in English one says PMN or ANC - any specialists out there? In any case, it refers to the number of infection-fighting white blood cells. Cécile has had fewer than 400 for the past week. The last blood test showed that the platelets are at a sufficiently high level and also she was relieved to learn on Thursday that her hemoglobin had gone up - last Monday it had been very low, verging on the limit for a blood transfusion. By Thursday the level had gone up to 9.4 g/dl which meant she didn't have to sit in hospital for 3 hours that afternoon - the time it takes for a transfusion. It is still very low in absolute terms and has probably accounted for the long sleeps Cécile has been having in the afternoons for the past week.

She had an appointment at Debré on Wednesday for another electromyogram to check the nerve and muscle reactions in her right leg. The neurologist, the same lady we saw last time, seemed satisfied that Cécile's nerves are reacting slightly better than in September. She explained that it was a long process to recover normal sensations but she was pleased with the results. We will have to see now with Cécile's doctor whether or not Cécile can continue the treatment with the neurotoxic chemo.

No classes this week because it's still the school holidays. It's probably a good thing because Cécile hasn't had much energy for working. She has seen a couple of friends, very briefly. We haven't managed any walks in the park, just a short stroll to the end of the street and back. But she does seem to be sleeping a lot better. She has gradually stopped taking all the painkillers and is starting to get a bit more colour in her cheeks.

We will be in hospital tomorrow, hopefully with better blood test results so the chemo can start again. This next phase is one Cécile has already had - unfortunately it gives very bad nausea. The boxes of anti-emetics are lined up, waiting. We will be back in hospital on Tuesday for an MRI scan to look at the knee and ankle of Cécile's right leg. If the chemo starts, Cécile will also be having injections at 12-hourly intervals - a nurse comes to the house between 7 and 8 in the evening and again in the morning.
There are also a couple of classes programmed - maths and history. Cécile has exams at the end of the year - not really the same as GCSEs as this will only be the end of year 10 but she has continuous assessment in all subjects and written exams in maths, French and history. She is already starting to worry but we think she will be fine - she did a maths test just before the holidays - the same one her classmates had done - and her teacher phoned last week to say that she had 19/20 - the best mark in the class!

Cécile n'a pas pu commencer la suite de la chimio lundi dernier car elle n'avait pas encore assez de PNN (les globules qui luttent contre les microbes). Depuis une semaine elle a un taux inférieur à 400. Le dernier bilan, jeudi, montre que les plaquettes sont en nombre suffisant pour reprendre la chimio et dans le même bilan Cécile était soulagée d'apprendre que le taux d'hémoglobine était en train de monter. Elle n'avait que 8,8 g/dl lundi mais jeudi le taux était de 9,4. Cécile a donc évité une attente de trois heures - le temps nécessaire pour une transfusion. Le taux est tout de même faible en termes absolus, ce qui explique probablement les longues siestes cette semaine.

 Mercredi Cécile avait rendez-vous à Debré pour une électromyogramme pour contrôler celle qui a été faite en septembre. La neurologue, la même que nous avons vue la dernière fois, était satisfaite des réactions des nerfs. Elle nous a expliqué qu'il fallait du temps pour retrouver entièrement les sensations mais que pour Cécile c'était en bonne voie. Reste à voir avec le médecin référent si Cécile peut reprendre la chimio neurotoxique qui pourrait être à l'origine du problème.

Aucun cours cette semaine car c'était toujours les vacances scolaires. Plutôt une bonne chose car Cécile n'était pas en grande forme. Elle a vu deux copines mais pas longtemps car elle fatigue vite. Elle ne s'est pas promenée dans le parc mais a réussi à faire des allers-retours au bout de la rue. Elle commence à mieux dormir et petit à petit a arrêté les antidouleurs. Elle commence à avoir meilleure mine.

Nous serons à l'hôpital demain pour démarrer la suite du traitement si les résultats sont satisfaisants. Cécile connaît déjà cette phase - malheureusement elle donne beaucoup de nausées mais nous avons déjà prévu les boîtes d’anti-émétiques. Nous retournons à l'hôpital mardi pour un IRM du genou. Si la chimio peut démarrer, Cécile aura aussi la visite d'une infirmière toutes les douze heures pour des injections de chimio.
Il y a deux cours programmés: maths et histoire-géo. Cécile est en troisième et passera le brevet à la fin de l'année scolaire. Elle commence à s'inquiéter mais a priori ça devrait aller. Elle a fait un contrôle de maths juste avant les vacances et son prof a téléphoné pour dire que Cécile a eu 19/20 - la meilleure note de la classe!
