20 weeks ...

It's now been 20 weeks since the treatment started. Cécile has had more than half the chemo sessions that are involved in this first intensive period which lasts about nine months. Obviously, there will be more during the maintenance period of two years. Time-wise it's difficult to say if Cécile has actually reached the half-way point or not. As you have read, she had a ten-day delay before starting the current phase because her blood count was too low. This can happen again before she gets to the end of the intensive period but if things go more or less according to plan, after another 20 weeks the central line will be taken out and Cécile can return to school.
The overall length and the permanent weariness seem to be taking their toll. Cécile is finding it difficult to stay motivated. But there are good moments! Yesterday her chemo started fairly early and consequently we left hospital at a reasonable time - before 2pm. Cécile's blood count was a lot better than last week and so we decided that we could make a trip together to the garden centre, Truffaut, where they also sell arts and crafts materials and Christmas decorations. We spent a pleasant hour looking at the puppies which are for sale, choosing more paint for the window decorations Cécile is making, looking at small trees - Cécile would like a miniature (not Bonsai) Japanese maple for the garden. We also looked at all the lovely Christmas decorations and the nativity scene - getting ideas for how to decorate the house this year seeing as we won't be going away anywhere. The first purchases were a luminous bear (which the dogs Ubi and Hopper found most intriguing!) and a long set of lights which we are hoping one of the men will be able to adorn the Ginko tree with! Oh - and we didn't forget the birds: a huge sack of bird seed and a few fat balls to hang from the Ginko outside the kitchen window!


Cela fait maintenant vingt semaine depuis le début du traitement. Plus que la moitié des séances de chimio de cette phase intensive ont eu lieu. Il y en aura d'autres, bien sûr, pendant la phase d'entretien de deux ans mais pas au même rythme. Il est difficile de dire si Cécile est arrivée à mi-chemin dans la durée: comme vous avez pu lire, elle a eu un retard de dix jours à cause d'un bilan sanguin insuffisant et cela peut se reproduire avant la fin de cette phase intensive. Mais si tout se passe à peu près comme prévu, dans vingt semaines Cécile n'aura plus son cathéter et pourra retourner à l'école, ce qu'elle souhaite plus que tout.
La durée et la fatigue permanente commencent à peser pour Cécile. Elle a du mal à rester motivée. Mais il y a quelques bons moments quand même! Hier la chimio a commencé assez tôt et du coup, nous avons quitté l'hôpital avant 14 heures. Comme le bilan sanguin était en nette amélioration par rapport à lundi nous avons décidé de faire une sortie à Truffaut. Nous avons passé une bonne heure à regarder les chiots (passage obligé!), choisir de la peinture pour les décorations que Cécile prépare pour Noël, regarder les arbres - Cécile aimerait un acer japonais pour le jardin et bien sûr choisir les premières décorations de Noël! L'énorme crèche nous a donné des idées pour notre crèche à la maison - nous allons redoubler d'efforts cette année comme nous restons sur place! Les premiers achats sont donc: un ours lumineux (que Hopper et Ubi ont reniflé avec curiosité!) et une grande guirlande que nous espérons installer dans le Ginko - avec l'aide d'un de nos hommes! Et nous n'avons pas oublié les oiseaux: quelques kilos de graines et des boules de graisse pour l'hiver!
