Hard times ...

The only connection with Dickens' novel is the title - but it seemed pretty appropriate because the past two weeks have been particularly hard for Cécile. She is now nearly half way through the intensification phase and has finished the first round of chemo - her blood count is very low due to the strength of the chemo so we must be very careful to avoid any sources of infection while Cécile is so fragile. The side effects of this chemo have been particularly disagreable. During the second week Cécile's glycemic level shot up and we were told of the potential risk of diabetes - despite having been on a sugar-free diet ... Cécile was rather concerned about this but a blood test taken at the end of the week before Cécile had eaten in the morning showed more normal levels so that was a relief. The three days in hospital had been exhausting for Cécile. On the days inbetween she had some lessons which helped take her mind off hospital.
Then last Saturday night (11th) Cécile woke with pains in her knee. Despite taking paracetomol she was unable to sleep. The same happened on Sunday night so we told the team at Sud-Francilien when Cécile went in for her chemo. They decided to put one of the chemos on hold as it was probably the cause of the pain, especially as the aching knee is the same leg as the foot problem mentioned earlier. Cécile was given drops to help ease the pain. Unfortunately they didn't help and when she was back in hospital on Thursday for a blood test she had a talk with a nurse specialised in pain relief who prescribed other drops. They don't seem to be working very well - the pain isn't so intense but Cécile is still sleeping very badly. We're hoping that now she's off the corticosteroids her nights will be less agitated.
A friend is helping Cécile with relaxation techniques. After the first session Cécile seemed very positive so we're hoping this will help her.
It's now the school holidays so no teachers will be coming for the next two weeks. Cécile is hoping to see some of her school friends now they have more free time and today she is happy because her cousins from Lausanne are coming for the day!

Les temps difficiles ...

Les temps sont en effet très difficiles pour Cécile en ce moment. Cette dernière quinzaine n'a pas été facile pour elle. La première période de chimio de la phase d'intensification est terminée: elle est au repos pendant dix jours avant la suite. Elle est en aplasie, provoquée par la chimio, et nous devons donc être très vigilants pendant cette période.
Les effets secondaires de cette phase sont particulièrement désagréables. Pendant la deuxième semaine de traitement, le taux de glycémie de Cécile était très élevé et on nous a averti de la possibilité d'un problème de diabète. Heureusement, après un bilan sanguin fait à jeun, le taux semble correct. Ensuite, samedi dernier, Cécile s'est réveillée pendant la nuit avec des douleurs au genou. Les douleurs ne passaient pas avec le paracétamol et dimanche c'était la même chose. Lors de son hospitalisation le lundi Cécile en a parlé. L'équipe a décidé de suspendre la pose d'un des produits et a prescrit des gouttes anti-douleur. Malheureusement les gouttes n'ont pas eu beaucoup d'effet. Lors d'une visite le jeudi pour un bilan sanguin, Cécile a eu un entretien avec une infirmière spécialisée 'douleur' et un autre produit a été prescrit. Mais Cécile ne dort toujours pas très bien, même si la douleur est moins intense. On attend pour voir si le fait d'avoir arrêté les corticoïdes aura un effet sur son sommeil.
Un ami a proposé de faire de la sophrologie avec Cécile. Après la première séance Cécile était très optimiste. Espérons que cette technique lui apporte quelques clés pour se détendre.
C'est maintenant les vacances scolaires donc Cécile n'aura pas la visite des enseignants pendant quinze jours. Elle espère pouvoir voir quelques copines pour se distraire. Aujourd'hui elle attend avec impatience la visite de ses cousins de Lausanne!
