RI 10

Just a quick update before the Christmas holidays - and a chance to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Cécile had her tenth re-induction yesterday. Only two more to go now! She's back on corticosteroids for the week which isn't much fun but at least she'll have finished before Christmas Day so no holding back on turkey and stuffing!

She has her ups and downs but apart from getting tired quickly she's living a pretty normal life. School is fine - she's had an absolutely glowing report with very positive comments from her teachers. She's looking forward to the two-week break and seeing her brothers at Christmas.

The next appointment is her quarterly check-up with her haematologist early January. Until then she'll be making the most of her holidays. Happy Christmas everyone!

Christmas Cake!

Une dernière mise à jour avant les vacances - et l'occasion pour nous de vous souhaiter à tous un Joyeux Noël et une très bonne année 2016!

Cécile était à l'hôpital hier pour sa dixième ré-induction. Il n'en reste plus que deux! Elle commence sa semaine de corticoïdes, ce qui veut dire les contraintes alimentaires et les douleurs articulaires ... mais elle aura fini avant Noël et ne sera pas privée de tous les repas de fêtes!

Globalement tout se passe bien et à part la fatigue chronique elle mène une vie plutôt 'normale'. Elle réussit bien sa seconde - son bulletin était excellent avec des commentaires élogieux de ses enseignants. Elle attend les vacances avec impatience et surtout les retrouvailles avec ses frères.

Son prochain rendez-vous aura lieu début janvier avec son médecin référent à Debré. Mais pour l'instant elle va profiter de ses vacances. Joyeux Noël à tous!

RI 9

Today is Saint Cecile's Day today so I thought I'd better catch up on the blog! Cécile started her ninth month of the re-induction phase this week. Everything is still going according to plan, which is good news.

C'est la Sainte Cécile aujourd'hui donc une mise à jour s'impose! Cécile a commencé le neuvième mois de cette phase de ré-induction. Tout se passe bien.

The holidays seem a long time ago now. Cécile rested the first week then we went away the second week: first to see her brother, Ben, studying in Holland. From there we went to Amsterdam and Brugge. Here are a couple of photos:

Luckily this wasn't during the week of corticotherapy so chocolates could be sampled by all!

Les vacances semblent loin derrière nous maintenant. La première semaine Cécile en a profité pour bien se reposer. La deuxième semaine nous sommes partis d'abord aux Pays Bas pour rendre visite à son frère, Ben. On en a profité pour retourner à Amsterdam, histoire de faire un petit tour au Rijksmuseum avant d'aller à Brugges. La semaine de corticoïdes étant passée, tout le monde a pu déguster les chocolats sans hésitation!

The next step is the quarterly lumbar puncture. Then one more re-induction before the Christmas holidays.

Le prochain rendez-vous sera pour la ponction lombaire trimestrielle. Ensuite il restera une ré-induction avant les vacances de Noël.

Last week of RI 7

It's been a while since the last post - maybe this is a good sign - it means there isn't so much happening on the medical front and Cécile is at last able to lead an almost normal life.

Il était grand temps de faire une mise à jour du blog! La distance entre les billets est plutôt une bonne nouvelle - il y a moins de choses à raconter sur le plan médical et Cécile commence enfin à reprendre une vie à peu près normale.

She started a new school in September. This is normal at her age - in the secondary system in France there are two stages at school: 'collège' from 11 to 14 years old then 'lycée' from 15 to 18. This did make things slightly more complicated as it meant explaining Cécile's condition to a certain number of people in the school so they understand why Cécile may have to be absent from time to time. The first few days were very tiring for Cécile - just moving around from one classroom to another and waiting in the queue at the canteen took some getting used to. And she was exhausted after the first sports lesson! But she's taking it all in her stride and although she gets tired she is coping extremely well.

Elle a fait sa rentrée au lycée en septembre. Le changement d'établissement nous a obligé a mettre la nouvelle équipe enseignante au courant de la condition de Cécile afin de bien gérer ses absences et garder un œil sur elle. Les premiers jours étaient très fatigants - il lui a fallu un peu de temps pour s'habituer physiquement aux changements de salle toutes les heures et la queue à la cantine ... Et le premier cours de EPS l'a épuisée! Mais elle s'adapte et fait preuve de beaucoup de volonté, comme d'habitude.
 
She has started playing the piano again and also having ballet lessons - just once a week for the moment while she adapts to the new rhythm.

Elle a repris les cours de piano et reprend tranquillement la danse - un cours par semaine pendant qu'elle s'habitue à son nouveau rythme.
 
From a medical point of view she has had her quarterly lumbar puncture, her seventh reinduction and a trip to the Debré hospital to see her hematologist there. All this is now more complicated to plan, trying to book appointments so Cécile's school timetable is not disrupted too much - so far she's only missed a handful of classes and of course, always catches up immediately!

D'un point de vue médical elle a eu sa ponction lombaire trimestrielle, sa 7ème ré-induction et un rendez-vous avec son médecin référent à l'Hôpital Debré. Tout devient plus compliqué au niveau de la prise des rendez-vous afin d'éviter trop d'absences au lycée. Pour l'instant Cécile a manqué une poignée de cours - tous rattrapés aussitôt!
 
The school holidays start at the end of next week and the two-week break will give Cécile the chance to rest and hopefully fit in a few more trips out, like last Sunday when we went to the third floor of the Eiffel Tower - the first time she's been able to get right to the top!

Les vacances scolaires commencent à la fin de la semaine prochaine. Cécile pourra en profiter pour bien se reposer et faire d'autres sorties, comme celle de dimanche dernier quand elle a enfin pu atteindre le troisième étage de la Tour Eiffel!

RI 6 - Week One

Cécile started her 6th Reinduction yesterday with her intravenous chemo in hospital. Her blood count was OK apart from one of the liver enzymes but this can be a side effect of the chemotherapy.

Cécile a commencé sa 6ème Ré-induction hier après une demi-journée à l'hôpital pour sa chimio par intraveineuse. Son bilan était correct à part le taux des enzymes du foie qui était un peu élevé, un des effets secondaires de la chimiothérapie.

Le Clos Lucé

This past month has been relatively uneventful from a medical point of view. Cécile still has problems with her knees but the x-ray taken last month showed there were no signs of osteonecrosis, a possible side-effect from the corticotherapy. The doctors don't seem particularly concerned. It has meant that any walks have had to be adapted to Cécile's state of fatigue. We're hoping that the pain will start to subside as it is rather a handicap for Cécile. She has also been having more nausea recently so she's been subscribed some medication to help relieve the symptoms.

Le mois d'août a été relativement calme sur le plan médical. Cécile a toujours des problèmes de genoux mais la radio prise le mois dernier ne montre aucun signe d'ostéonécrose, un des effets secondaires de la corticothérapie. Les médecins ne sont pas spécialement inquiets mais Cécile souffre quand même et nos balades doivent être adaptées à son niveau de fatigue. Depuis quelques semaines elle souffre à nouveau de nausées donc le médecin a prescrit un médicament pour soulager les symptômes.  

Le Vieux Lyon

Cécile has been able to profit from the month of August with various outings and short breaks. We've been to Amboise for a couple of days then down to Lyon to visit her brother who moved there in June. We also went to Strasbourg for a few days, visiting the city and environs and sampling the local produce!

Cécile a profité de ces dernières semaines pour faire quelques sorties. Nous sommes allées à Amboise et ensuite à Lyon pour rendre visite à son frère qui y habite depuis le mois de juin. Nous avons passé quelques jours à Strasbourg pour visiter la ville et les environs et goûter la choucroute et les tartes aux myrtilles!

The school holidays are nearly over and this last week will be spent catching up with friends and getting things ready for going back to school at the beginning of September. Next post in a month's time.

Les vacances scolaires touchent à leur fin et cette dernière semaine sera consacrée aux retrouvailles avec les copines et à la préparation des affaires pour la rentrée au lycée. Prochain billet dans un mois.

RI 5 - Week one

The Doppler scan showed that no damage has been caused to Cécile's liver. With this good news we set off on holiday: first a week in Annecy and then a week in Barfleur. Cécile was able to do lots of activites: cycling, swimming, canoeing, walking ... it's done her a world of good and she looks a picture of health.

L'échographie Doppler montrait que le foie de Cécile n'a pas été abîmé par la chimio. Une bonne nouvelle! Nous sommes partis en vacances, soulagés, et Cécile a pu en profiter pour faire plein d'activités: du vélo, du kayak, de la rando, de la baignade ... cela lui a fait beaucoup de bien et elle a très bonne mine.

After two weeks on holiday we had to get back for Cécile's fifth reinduction. Her blood count was ok and she had her chemo yesterday. It was difficult having to return to hospital after the holidays but the nurses, as usual, were cheerful and positive and the session was soon over. Next post in a month's time!

Après deux semaines de vacances il fallait rentrer chez nous pour la réinduction n° 5. Le bilan sanguin était correct et Cécile a eu sa chimio par intra-veineuse hier. Le retour à l'hôpital était difficile après les vacances mais les infirmières étaient souriantes et aimables, comme d'habitude, et la séance était vite finie. Rendez-vous dans un mois pour le prochain billet!

RI 4 - week one

After satisfactory results for her blood test, Cécile had her intraveinous chemo on Monday (29th June) marking the beginning of the Fourth Reinduction. Quick reminder: at the start of each reinduction Cécile also has a week of corticosteroids which unfortunately means the salt-free, sugar-free diet.

Les résultats du bilan lundi matin (29 juin) étaient satisfaisants et Cécile a pu avoir sa chimio par intra-veineuse, ainsi commençant la 4ème Réinduction. Petit rappel: chaque début de réinduction est accompagné d'une semaine sous corticoïdes ce qui veut dire un régime sans sel et sans sucre.

On Tuesday she had an appointment with her hematologist at the Debré hospital. Her doctor was satisfied with the clinical examination but just seemed concerned about the level of platelets which remains rather low. She has asked us to take Cécile for a hepatic doppler scan to make sure that the chemo isn't causing damage to Cécile's liver. We've got an appointment at the end of next week.

Cécile avait rendez-vous avec son médecin référent à Debré mardi après-midi. Le médecin était satisfaite avec l'examen clinique mais comme les plaquettes de Cécile ont du mal à remonter à un niveau satisfaisant, elle a prescrit une échographie doppler hépatique avant de contrôler l'effet de la chimio sur le foie de Cécile. Nous avons rendez-vous à la fin de la semaine prochaine.

Otherwise all is well. Cécile is relaxing now and getting into holiday mode. Today we went to Compiègne to visit the museum where you can see the the railway carriage in which the Armistice was signed at the end of WWI.

Sinon tout va bien. Cécile commence à se reposer et adopte petit à petit le mode 'vacances'. Aujourd-hui nous avons visité le Musée de l'Armistice où l'on peut voir le wagon dans lequel l'armistice de 1918 a été signé.

 

We also went to Pierrefonds to take a look at the castle before having a picnic - salt-free, sugar-free!

Nous avons fait un saut à Pierrefonds pour voir le château avant de pique-niquer (sans sel, sans sucre!)

RI 3 - First picnic of the year in Fontainebleau!

Cécile was able to have her lumbar puncture last Monday (22nd June) as she hadn't had any fever since Friday evening. It was a long day - we arrived at the hospital at 9h30 and had to wait until gone 3pm for the lumbar puncture. Cécile was apprehensive about the side effects (headaches and sickness) so the doctor recommended drinking plenty of coca cola over the first 24 hours after the injection. We're not sure if that was the reason but Cécile didn't suffer at all afterwards.

Cécile a eu sa ponction lombaire lundi dernier (22 juin) car cela faisait plus de 48 heures qu'elle n'avait plus de fièvre. La journée était longue - nous sommes arrivées à l'hôpital à 9h30 et la ponction lombaire a eu lieu après 15 heures. Cécile appréhendait des effets secondaires - maux de tête et vomissements - mais peut-être grâce à la consigne de boire plusieurs cannettes de coca cola pendant les premières 24 heures elle n'a pas eu de séquelles.

The rest of the week was spent revising for the exams Cécile was taking last Thursday and Friday. Then finally she was able to relax! We decided to take the opportunity to go to Fontainebleau for our first picnic there this year. The weather was lovely and it was nice to benefit from the shade of the forest.

Cécile a eu deux jours pour réviser avant de passer le DNB jeudi et vendredi. Enfin elle pourra se détendre! Nous avons profité du beau temps ce week-end pour faire notre premier pique-nique à Fontainebleau. Tout le monde a apprécié l'ombre dans la fôret!
